The concept behind my graphite drawings is everything that revolves around the human condition. My most recent work has a focus specifically on memories, present burdens and dreams for the future. I like to explore themes that pertain to self-reflection of the human condition, and the growth that emerges from that process.

One way in which I facilitate this is with the strict and purposeful use of black and white. Graphite is not only an easily accessible material, but it is the perfect tool for creating the emotional tension and release needed to evoke self-reflection. The use of nudity and absence of faces is also a tool, used to help us keep balance between the discomfort of vulnerability and the allure of mystery. Within this balance we can see all sides of a situation or story that has plagued us for too long. Whether the story is unique or universal, each one has an entire life behind it as well as a connection to our higher selves. In my work the higher self is depicted by the eye of truth and consciousness, assisting us even when we are not aware of it. Just as our bodies encapsulate our souls, it is always encapsulated by the patterns and shapes that make up our lives.

I chose to be an artist because I love introspection and understanding subconscious thoughts through the creation of drawings. Just like other artists who create surreal scenes with a great deal of symbolism, I also enjoy exploring the innermost self but unlike those artists my hope is that viewers intentionally use my art as a meditative tool for self-discovery and eventually growth.
